Celebrating Vandana Shiva

vandana-shiva

Vandana Shiva is considered one of the historic women of the world.

She is a scholar, human rights activist, environmental and food sovereignty advocate and author who has stood up to the corporate goliaths of chemical agribusiness.

She inspires people the world over to change and champions ecological agriculture that restores biodiversity, organic seed freedom, healthy soil, fresh water and clean air.

The 2015 film The Seeds of Vandana Shiva tells the story of this visionary woman who believes that control over seed by corporations like Monsanto means control over our lives, our food and our freedom. The concept of “Sacred Seed” refers to the fact that the seed is the source of life and first link in the food chain.

Shiva works to counter corporations like Monsanto. Her efforts are fueled by concern about the “seed emergencies” these corporations have self-created: non-renewable sterile seeds, seed patents, seed monopolies and “biopiracy” genetic engineering.

One of the leaders and board members of the International Forum on Globalization, Shiva is a figure of the alter-globalization movement. She is a member of the scientific committee of the Fundacion IDEAS, Spain’s Socialist Party’s think tank. She is also a member of the International Organization for a Participatory Society. She received the Right Livelihood Award in 1993, and numerous other prizes.

Learn more about this and other issues Vandana Shiva is involved in by viewing the 2015 film “The Seeds of Vandana Shiva,” or “Seed: The Untold Story.”
